Congratulations Rink Cycle Choir participants!

Thanks to our Rink Cycle choir members for representing Poirier so well at this once in a lifetime event.  Huge appreciation goes to our parent helpers, too – we couldn’t have done it without you.

I wanted to share the message from Maestra Tania Miller below.  This is what it’s all about!

Tania Miller: Kids’ concert an outpouring of collective love for music
TANIA MILLER / .

APRIL 2, 2017 05:55 AM
This is the second in a series of three articles by Tania Miller, who retires this spring after 14 seasons as music director of the Victoria Symphony. In the series, Miller reflects on memorable aspects of her tenure here.
Next weekend, the Victoria Symphony will create one of the biggest musical gatherings in Victoria’s history, with 1,200 schoolchildren coming together as one group to join the Symphony in a celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday. It’s a moment to take note of culture and community, and of how integral the arts are to our ability to express and celebrate who we are, where we have come from and what is important to us.

Each year, the Victoria Symphony’s concert venues draw thousands of people from all parts of this community and transport them to new worlds and times, while awakening memories, emotions and reflections of their lives in the experience of the music. That is especially true for young listeners coming to classical music for, perhaps, the first time. They might be our most important audience of all.

All of us naturally want our children and young people to receive the gift of knowing and understanding this experience — to know what it feels like to be in a collective listening experience where the flows and swells of excitement and personal reflection take them on their personal journeys and enrich their lives.

We want our children to grow up with something beautiful and empowering in their lives, something to rely on individually while giving them cause to be a part of a community of shared experience. We want to give them options to balance the isolation of screens and earphones, and an alternative to the unnatural camaraderie of social media.

Next Sunday afternoon at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Symphony will present its second Rink Cycle concert. It brings together 1,200 elementary and high-school students to make music with us: singers, dancers, band students, string students and First Nations drummers, all joining forces in a shared experience alongside the members of the Victoria Symphony, as, together, we perform iconic, celebratory music about Canada and written by Canadians.

It will be a massive outpouring of a collective passion for music. The memories of those young musicians will be imprinted for life with the experience of being a part of something bigger than themselves and yet reliant on each individual for success.

Perhaps even greater than putting on a concert of this magnitude is the preparation that goes into it. Teachers from across the Victoria and Sooke school districts have been working for years to teach the children about notes, rhythms and sound quality, team responsibilities, and the commitment that it takes to prepare for such a concert — as, indeed, for life itself.

Our Victoria Symphony musicians have spent years, too, sharing their passion for music within our community through coaching, teaching and chamber music, while at the same time actively involving themselves in numerous performances with other arts organizations in the community.

For this concert, I especially want to thank Marcelline Moody and Sandy Grayson for all that they have done to curate and organize this event with all of the schools and teachers.

I still vividly recall my own first childhood experience hearing the Regina Symphony, and the formative influence it had on me — not just professionally, but personally. As I look toward the close of my tenure as music director here in Victoria, I know that I will always cherish the many opportunities we’ve had to bring together children with our orchestra — be it through school and kids’ concerts in the Royal Theatre, at community events such as Symphony Splash, or in our (now two) epic Rink Cycle productions.

Each time, I thrive on the experience of seeing rows and rows of beaming, shining eyes that express the impact that music is making on them in that moment. Who could ask for greater reward or memory than that?

Fall 2016 Choir Update

Weekly rehearsals are underway for the new school year and the École Poirier Choir is preparing for our upcoming performance at the school’s Remembrance Day assembly on November 10th. It’s great to see many returning choir members, along with several new to choir, including our very keen grade 2s! Choir students from grades 2-5 meet in the Music Room once per week.  We have not established a regular meeting day yet, but towards the end of November we will meet every Tuesday.  Currently, Mme Arts and Mr. Daykin are meeting on Tuesdays with another music group of grade 4/5 students to prepare to enter the CBC Music Class Challenge!

It would be wonderful if choir members could wear a white top on November 10th for our concert.  Parents and friends are welcome to attend the assembly.  Students who are members of Scouts Canada or Girl Guides are encouraged to wear their uniform to school, if they wish.

Below you will find the words to the piece we will be singing.  We are working on the French lyrics, but as yet have not decided if the whole choir is going to be ready to have them memorized.  It is possible we will have an intermediate group of singers perform the French verses.  Merci beaucoup to Mme Daykin and her colleagues at École John Stubbs for translating this wonderful choral piece and sharing the French lyrics with us!

If you listen to the Youtube video, you’ll notice the lyrics are slightly different – please use the inclusive lyrics below as we have practised.

Hymn to Freedom

By Oscar Peterson

When every heart / Joins every heart

And together yearns for liberty,

That’s when we’ll be free

When every hand / Joins every hand

And together molds our destiny,

That’s when we’ll be free

Any hour, any day, the time soon will come

When we will live in dignity,

That’s when we’ll be free

When everyone/ Joins in our song

And together sings in harmony

That’s when we’ll be free

Oscar Emmanuel PetersonCCCQOOnt (August 15, 1925 – December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was called the “Maharaja of the keyboard” by Duke Ellington, but simply “O.P.” by his friends.[1][2] He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists,[3] and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.

Peterson was born to immigrants from the West Indies; his father worked as a porter for Canadian Pacific Railway. Peterson grew up in the neighbourhood of Little Burgundy in Montreal, Quebec. It was in this predominantly black neighbourhood that he found himself surrounded by the jazz culture that flourished in the early 20th century.

Welcome to a new Choir season!

Happy New Year, Choir families! January brings the start of our Sing Out! choir season.  On Monday, March 7th at 7 pm at EMCS, we will join our hosts, The Sooke Community Choir along with other elementary choirs from Sooke core schools for an evening of song.  Poirier will be performing two songs – The Ghost Ship, and Clever Chameleon. Please check out the lyrics and videos below, and encourage your choir member to practise.  We generally only rehearse once a week, so listening to the music in between rehearsals is really helpful when we have a lot of words and melodies to learn.

Mark your calendars – more information will be available soon.

The Ghost Ship

Words and Music by

Don Besig and Nancy Price

1. Now listen well as a tale I tell

Of a night I shook with fear.

We were sailing west on the open sea,

Headin’ home from a long, long year.

I was standing watch all alone that night

When I heard a wailing cry.

As I strained to see what the sound could be,

Something flashed and caught my eye.

Chorus

And the cold wind blew——–(pitch goes up first

then down w/crescendo and decrescendo)

And the cold wind blew—-

2. ‘Twas then I spied off the starboard side

A strange mysterious sigh–t.

I froze with fear as it drifted near

Like a ghost in the dark of nigh– t.

I could see a sail on a broken mast

And deserted decks below.

From all around came a mournful sound,

But I saw not a living soul!

Chorus

And the cold wind blew—- < ooo > ——

And the cold wind blew—-

3. Well I held fast to the forward mast

As the ship moved slowly on,

And I watched that day ‘til the break of day,

When I knew that it fin’lly had gone.

Oh they laughed and joked as I told my tale

To the captain and—the men.

But the story’s true, I can promise you,

And it’s sure to happen again.

Yes, it’s sure  –  –   to happen a – gain.

Chorus

And the cold wind blew——–(pitch goes up…)

And the cold wind blew—-!

Clever Chameleon  Words and music by Andy Beck

All:      There’s a clever chameleon

That I’m trying to find

But the clever chameleon

Is playing tricks with my mind

For a clever chameleon

Has a singular skill

And a clever chameleon

Can change its colour at will

Are you green or yellow or brown or blue?

Clever chameleon, which one are you?

Are you purple or orange or pink or white?

Part 1                                                                          Part 2

Clever chameleon                                                    Chameleon,         chameleon

Now a clever chameleon…                                     Chameleon

Right in front of your eyes…                                               Chameleon

A clever chameleon…                                                          A clever chameleon

Can quickly change a disguise.

                                                                               >> For a clever chameleon…

Chameleon                                                               So acute and so keen…

Chameleon                                                               Well, a clever chameleon…

A clever chameleon…                                                          Rarely wants to be seen.

ALL

Are you green or yellow or brown or blue?  Clever chameleon, I can’t see you!

Are you purple or orange or pink or white?  Clever chameleon…

Very clever chameleon!

Tell me, clever chameleon –                                              Tell me, clever chameleon

Of all the colours you do                                                    Of all the colours you do

Oh, clever chameleon                                                         Oh, clever chameleon

Which one  –  is  –  honestly  –  you?

Chameleon.  Clever!                                                            Clever!

Chameleon.  Very clever!                                        Clever!

Information for our performance at Journey

Hello Poirier Choir Families!

                                        imgres.jpg

Our annual visit to Ayre Manor on Friday was a success!  The students sang beautifully and truly brightened the season for many residents.  The seniors, including one who was 104, thanked us by singing to us at the end.  Such a sweet moment!  Thanks to the many parents who were able to attend, and to those who helped on the bus.

For those students who have indicated they can attend, we are set to perform at Journey’s band and strings concert on Wednesday, Dec 16th.  Parents are required to remain during the performance. Please arrive between 7-7:15, and meet and sign in at the Multi-purpose room beside the gym. The concert begins at 7:30 pm.
The concert should last until approximately 8:30.  Families are encouraged to stay for the duration of the concert if possible.  This is a great opportunity to have our elementary kids see what the middle school music program is all about. If your child is leaving early, please let Mme Arts, Mme Beattie or Mrs. Miller know.  The choir will gather for sign out in the multi purpose room after the show.
Huge thanks to our wonderful accompanist, Laura Dowhy!  We are fortunate to have her. 🙂
Any questions, please contact Mme Arts at the school at 250-642-0500.

Change of time for Ayre Manor visit!

Hello Choir Families,

We have had to change the time for our visit to Ayre Manor on Friday.  We’ll be leaving Poirier at 10:15 am, and returning at 11:30.

Also, we will be taking two busses on this trip to accommodate the choir, so any parents who wish to help out and would like to ride the bus may do so.  Please note that pre-schoolers are not permitted to ride the bus. If you are meeting us at Ayre Manor, note that parking is limited.

Please have your child wear a white top and black bottoms for this visit.  Christmas outfits are also fine, as are Santa hats.

Newsletter out – Permission Form due

Hello Poirier Choir Families,

A newsletter went out to choir members last Friday with information about our very important upcoming events. We’ll be singing at Ayre Manor on Friday, Dec. 11 at 1:30 pm, and at Journey on Wednesday December 16th at 7pm.  NOTE: there is now going to be room on the bus for parent helpers joining us at Ayre Manor, as our choir is so large that we will need to take two busses to get there.

Please check the last blog post which contains lyrics for the two songs we’ll be singing.  Paper copies also have gone home with students.  There are a lot of words to learn, and we aim to memorize all our music For performances!

Poirier Choir prepares for the Christmas Season!

Bravo Choir members, your performance at our Remembrance Day assembly was beautiful.  Merci 🙂

We have now begun learning new repertoire for Christmas.  Our plan is to visit Ayre Manor in December to share our singing with the residents there.  Please check the blog for upcoming dates, as we have more plans in the works for December!

One Christmas favourite of the Poirier Choir is the song, One Little Candle.  Several students have asked for the lyrics, so here they are:

One little candle burning bright. One little gleam of radiant light

Shimmering softly in the night, makes the darkness fade away

One little song that’s freely sung. One little bit of good that’s done

Brightens the world for everyone, like a candle’s golden ray

(Chorus) Keep your light, shining bright, like a torch of hope held high

Let it glow, let it show, keep the flame of love alive,

One little smile for someone new.  One little word of kindness, too

Kindles the friendship flame anew, soon the loneliness is gone

One little candle flame when shared, spreads through the darkness everywhere

Reflecting in hearts of those who care, and they pass the light along. (Chorus)

Here is a version from Youtube:

I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas

(Spoken:)  Not a lion, not a tiger, not a bear or a kangaroo

Not a donkey, not a monkey, no, they would never do!

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
I don’t want a doll, no dinky Tinkertoy
I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
I don’t think Santa Claus will mind, do you?
He won’t have to use our dirty chimney flue
Just bring him through the front door
That’s the easy thing to do

I can see me now on Christmas morning
Creeping down the stairs
Oh, what joy and what surprise
When I open up my eyes
To see my hippo hero standing there

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
No crocodiles, no rhinoceroses
I only like hippopotamuses
And hippopotamuses like me too!

(Spoken): Not a tortoise, not a porpoise, and a zebra would never do

Not an eagle, or a beagle, just one thing at the zoo!

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
Mom says the hippo would eat me up but then,
Teacher says a hippo is a vegetarian

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
I don’t think Santa Claus would mind, do you?
Oh there’s room for him in our two car garage
I’d feed him there and wash him there
And give him his massage

I can see me now on Christmas morning
Creeping down the stairs
Oh, what joy and what surprise
When I open up my eyes
To see my hippo hero standing there

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
No crocodiles, or rhinoceros-es-es
I only like hippopotamus-es-es

And hippopotamuses – No, not rhinoceroses –

Yes, hippopotamuses like me, too!

It’s true!

** Location Change ** (The singalong is no longer at the Community Hall)

The Sooke Community Choir has put out an invitation to the community to join in a Christmas Kick-Off Singalong at Holy Trinity Church – 1962 Murray Road on Sunday, December 6th, at 3:00 pm.  Families are welcome to come out and sing calls with the choir!  I hope that many Poirier families of our choir members will be able to JOIN IN!

Remembrance Day Assembly ~ Nov. 10, 2015

The École Poirier Choir will be performing a song entitled ‘Enfant de Paix ~ Child of Peace’ at our upcoming Remembrance Day Assembly on Tuesday, November 10th.  The assembly will begin shortly after the end of morning recess – at 10:45, and should last about 30 minutes.

The choir has been rehearsing together since September, and will be joined this year by all the students of Mme Hait’s grade 3/4 class, who have been working on the song in their music class as well, and will be providing a second part to the melody.  We are very fortunate to be accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Patricia Haisell, one of our noon hour supervisors, who is also a local piano teacher.

If possible, please have your choir student dress in a white top and dark pants or skirt for the performance.  If they wish, they can bring a change of clothes for the afternoon.  Each choir member will wear a yellow choir scarf and a poppy.

Parents are always welcome to attend our assemblies, so we would love to have you join us if you are able.

Check out the École Poirier Choir Blog at the following link to stay up to date with choir happenings.  Our next event will be our annual trip to share Christmas songs and cheer with the residents of Ayre Manor in December.
